Sony announces in its latest financial report that they have shipped 1.5 million units of PS4 in the second quarter of 2020, despite the announcement of PS5.
PS4 has surely won the long-lasting competition against Xbox in the current generation consoles when it comes to sales. Sony’s eighth-gen console has submitted 113.8 million unit shipments until September 2020 since its launch, which is an outstanding number for sure, though it’s still behind the PS2’s incredible record with 155 million unit sales.
Sony stopped supplying PS2 in 2012 when they officially started releasing PS4 consoles. If the same policy goes on for PS4 as well, probably the current-gen console of Sony will continue to sell until the launch of PS6. If the console could add 41 million units to its sales until Sony stops its supplement, PS4 could break the sales record of PlayStation 2.
Currently, some analysts believe that PS5 is going to sell even more than PS4 in its lifetime, and if that happens, Sony’s next-gen console could be even closer to naming itself as the best-selling PlayStation console ever.
During its lifetime, PS4 received such great titles that can be easily added to the world’s video game hall of fame. Sony made some incredible improvements in game development within its first-party studios during the current-generation of consoles which resulted in the production of some masterpieces such as Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, God of War, The Last of Us Part 2, Dreams, and some other brilliant exclusive games.
Of course, PS2 might still be the most beloved console in the PlayStation family, but PS4 is a great competitor for its grandfather and brought such success for Sony that can easily be compared to that of PS2.
Sony will still continue supporting PS4 by launching some of its next-gen titles like Spider-Man Miles Morales and Horizon 2: Forbidden West on the console in the future.
